Brexit may be reconfiguring more than just Europe. According to the latest paper by Research Fellow Stewart Paterson, the UK’s application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) may signal the emergence of middle powers and their influence on global trade. The middle powers – that is, the large trading economies beyond the three superpowers the United States, the European Union, and China – could lead the recovery of free trade and multilateralism, argues Paterson.
