China has used its market heft, the largest in the world, to turn itself into the most diversified economy among the 30 sampled in the Hinrich-IMD Sustainable Trade Index 2022. This has had consequences for the level of concentration of economies that depend heavily on the Middle Kingdom as an export destination, such as Peru and Australia. In this first deep dive in a series of four into findings and themes of the STI 2022, Oxford Economics takes us into a data-rich analysis of the patterns that have emerged in trade dependency in the last two decades.

While trade in manufactures as a proportion of overall economic activity appears to have peaked in some countries, trade in services has certainly not peaked nor slowed its growth as a proportion of GDP.
